The fast-rising singer, Mayowa Adewale (popularly known as Mayorkun)
just won the highly-coveted ‘Rookie of the Year’ award at the 2016
Headies, beating out the likes of Terry Apala – and it was totally
deserved.
Listening to Mayorkun’s assured sound, it’s hard to imagine a world where music was only just a side gig for him; but only a year ago, that was the case. After his NYSC year, Mayorkun went on to work in a bank, and only recorded music on the side.
It was clearly a good investment, because only 10 days after he released the music video for his first official single, “Eleko”, it hit one million views, and it has all been uphill from there.
Speaking with Naij, Mayorkun promised he is only starting and his next 20 singles are already done. With so many fans voting for him to land ‘Rookie of Year, you know the people clearly want more from this talented singer in 2017 – and he seems set to deliver.
